An Open Letter to David Heinemeier Hansson ( DHH) Ruby on Rails
Here is a nice comment that appeared today in response to my previous blog, inviting attention towards Mod_ruby and easy deployment thread in Ruby Forums.
Out of several comments on the above mentioned blog... this comment from India attracted my attention.
He is " Parag " and he has his own way of writing something special for David Heinemeier Hansson ( DHH) Ruby on Rails. I am pasting the same thing in this blog, helping you to read easily. You are however free to read the original comment in my previous blog..
Read here... What Parag has to say about David and Hosting scenario.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
@ David Heinemeier Hansson ( DHH )
Here's an Open letter of Request for you. I am from India, and I have something to say.
Hello Big Brother, you have done so much for the Ruby Community, by offering us Ruby on Rails, and you will be remembered for years for your great contribution.
Its time, you extend your support and help us once again with a solid solution for Rails Hosting.
The current solutions offered by other 3rd part developers are killing the real Rails charm. They seem to be looking only at a limited time solution.
We are getting carried away with false stories and fake promises by Hosting Companies. No Indian company is willing to take Rails hosting as a business solution, when India is considered to be a big threat for major developed countries, when it comes to Developing Softwares.
There's also a book published by an established Author like "Chad Fowler " called "My Job Went to India: 52 Ways to Save Your Job"
This clearly proves India is established, when we are talking about " IT " Sector. How can we see India lack behind, just due to lack of easy deployment solution. Here I am talking about India and Other developed countries too.
It seems, we are spending more time on choosing the right hosting company rather than it takes time for developing.
Since you know your baby ( Ruby on Rails ) too well, perhaps you can mold it/trim it/shape it, in a better and best possible manner once again.
So far you have offered us Tasty Bread called Ruby on Rails to survive. Can we expect a little butter called Easy Hosting once again to cherish for life time.
We know, you have given us more than we require and we are in no position of demanding more.
Your great framework solution has given sleepless nights to big corporates too and they too are now following your footsteps, without appreciating a real person like you.
The current scenario is... Rails Projects are living only on local Machines only. Books are getting published to explain, how to deploy the Rails site.
Is it really fair for a well deserved solution like Rails...?
You helped us save time, creating great solutions without spending much time in developing with Active Record and Scaffolding feature.
Now... that saved time is spend by developers searching for a Right Rails Hosting Company, which can keep up its promise as well as learning and understanding Rails deployment, which again leads us to the same few hosting companies around., which have their own stories about Mongrels and Thins and Apache.
Please think over this issue in your free time. Please find some time for the huge Rails community holding Kite in their hand, waiting for wind to blow.
I am from India. India Needs you as much as the world needs you.
May god bless you a lot.
Parag

Windows Hosting Rates are killing developers and Students... Is Microsoft aware ?
Windows Hosting rates are killing developers and Students... Is Microsoft aware ?
I was shocked to get an email today morning from my close buddy, now can be called as a free lancer.
He informed me that he had said a life long "goodbye" to Microsoft platform for ever, since he was constantly losing more money on hosting charges and some times even had to pay from his own pocket to survive.
He informed me that he shall be working with Open Source Languages now onwards, and he did not regret a bit to leave Microsoft career for ever. He was keen to survive today, rather than be remembered as an .Net developer tomorrow. He used to be a C# Genius, and have been working on big projects.
The killing rates of " Windows Web Hosting " and additional charges for " SQL Server " with many unexplained cache in calculations, were the main reasons to add frustration in proceeding further with the Microsoft Career.
On my request to know further, he explained that, there are several reasons behind his move.
we went on like this...
(1) Microsoft has never bothered to have a look in to Window Hosting Rates
(2) The complains regarding high charges collected by Hosting companies are totally ignored by deaf ears at Microsoft.
(3) On one hand, Microsoft is promoting OSS, and other way its killing them with Hosting rates.
(4) Why would one go for IIS7 to pay more for PHP and SQL server 2005
(5) With Apache, he gets best of many world together...(1) Rails (2) PhP (3) Python... and more
(6) MySql is free and no cache is played anywhere in hosting
(7) Huge difference between Apache and Windows Hosting Rates.
(8) Apache hosting companies are calculating in GB, while Windows Hosters are counting in MB
(9) Windows hosting will finally end up for Multinational companies or Brand Names only.
I totally agree on the above points with mu buddy. Today Microsoft has lost one potential developers, tomorrow they will lose one more.
A potential student today, is going to be an established developer tomorrow. And for this potential student a penny saved is like a dollar earned. If this student moves today, its clear that a developer has moved away. When a developer moves away, means a downfall for an organization. If we calculate the hobbyists in account the ratio will be much more.
Today with Web 2.0, Forums, Blogs, Comments etc.... More Database space is essential to survive and cost difference to offer this on windows platform is nothing but killing.
We hardly see any Word Press , Blogger type free CMS developed in asp.net. Not only these, Forums are also ignored getting developed for Windows Platform.
Microsoft on one hand tries to please dynamic language developers by bringing dynamic languages for .Net, which ultimately gets much costlier on Windows Platform, when the actual hosting plans shape up.
Microsoft should realize that each Asp.Net project, will finally shape in to a web development, and finally end up getting hosted on Windows Hosting Platform.
If the rates are going to kill Students, Free lancers and Developers, they are sure to move to a budget that fits their pocket.
In this scenario, the power of Asp..net, shall be totally ignored and real life decision would take place, which ultimately will result in the move taken by my friend.
If Microsoft cares for its community, its high time they control the monopoly of high charges taken by Window Hosting companies.
Currently the gap between Apache and Microsoft is huge and this will increase day by day, thats sure.
I am in totally support with my buddy, and would like to know, how other Developers, Students, hobbyists thinks the way we do.
Namaste!

Are we Pampering or Killing Ruby against Php silently.
When will Ruby have its own identity on web compared to PHP.
Can you answer these burning questions about Ruby with Proof.
Have long shall we continue to pamper it against PHP.
All good things said about Ruby turns to blank expressions when it comes to actual implementations or a explaining a proof on Web.
We read all good stories about Ruby, that it has a great syntax....Its totally object Oriented.... Its Powerful..... Rails was successful because it has Ruby as an language... A lots of religious wars fighting to favour Ruby till end.
If all said above its true... Then why the Impact of Ruby is far behind when it comes to Real Life web implementations on web...?
Its tough to see...
a great Forum developed totally in Ruby...Like PHPBB and many others available in PHP
Its tough to see..
Great e-commerce sites developed in Ruby....
Its tough to see..
Shout Box or Guest Book implementations in Ruby
Its tough to see...
Classifieds or dating Sites in Ruby.. which are flooded with PHP
Its tough to see...
Real Ruby Jobs and Ruby websites in New Projects.
Its tough to see...
Many other scenarios apart i mentioned above...
We have all been praising Ruby for a longer time since it deserves it.
But now... we have to take a Real life approach... since praising alone will not bring Bread and butter in the family.
We have been watching many Ruby Frameworks for the web like...
Rails
Merb
Camping
Sinatra
Ramaze
Nitro
Vintage
Wuby
What is the motto of all this frameworks, if none of them is finally going to offer us even a slice of bread, without Butter or jam at the end. Ruby is getting ported on different platforms... But where is the real life proof. Few examples cannot be taken as granted that Ruby is Powerful on web.
The most common example i have been watching for Ruby is " Blog Development in 10 Minutes ". Ok... thats one example, now what about the next example. And there is no answer to it. If Ruby development is that easy... then why there are no live examples. Why there are no real life starter kits explaining the power of Ruby on Web. Why there are no tutorials with a live proof running those examples.
Book publishers makes lots of money explaining the power of Ruby...But have they really shown any working example on web so far. Students get carried away with such books and developers are sitting silently watching this cheating grow.. Is it fair for our own Ruby community in long run.
I know it sounds sad to curse our own language... But at the end of the day we have to live. Its nice and easy to say thousand words favouring Ruby against PHP..... BUT... Its tough to utter even few words about the lack of Ruby's presence on Web compared to PHP.
Its better to scold and slap our child now... before he turns a terrorist in future. Its the best step taken by the real parents and that should be our approach as developers too. Ruby is our child and it should not be pampered beyond limits.
There are several factors affecting the real life scenario of Ruby development on web and one of them is tough deployment fear. Its time to build real life examples floating on the web, that can show and explain the speed of Ruby.
If you confident to prove its a day... you will have to show the world a shinning sun..
If you are sure its a night... you will have to show a moon.
If you are sure that ruby is powerful... come out with live examples.
I would like to hear more suggestions to make Ruby appear everywhere on the web. I do not want Ruby to live a long life only for hobbyists and students. I want it for developers too.
A Little joke at the end... Based on the topic above, as a moral of the story
A Father was praising his family in front of a relative.
Father said.. I have 5 son.
One is a doctor... .... Great, said the relative, He was impressed
Next one is Scientist....... Wow! said the relative
Third is a Developer...... Great!
Fourth is a Bank Officer...... Nice! . And what about your last child.
He runs a taxi....... So disappointing, said the relative. Sorry to hear about this poor fellow.
Don't feel sad, said the happy father. " He's the one who brings the income at home."
Namaste!
